BUSINESS BENEFITS OF EQ

SEL training creates Individuals with higher EQ who exhibit better academic performance, collaboration skills, and conflict resolution abilities. Schools with SEL programs have better attendance and graduation rates and reduced achievement gaps. As a result, students graduate better-prepared to enter the workplace.

  • A 2014 study of 409 call center workers showed that managing one’s own emotions contributes the most in explaining the variance in overall career adaptability with its four domains: career concern, career control, career confidence and career curiosity.
  • A landmark meta-analysis of 213 school-based SEL programs involving 270,034 students, from kindergarten through high school, showed an 11 percentile gain in standardized test scores Many SEL schools do even better. 
  • The program PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) has been shown to increase students’ scores on cognitive skills tests by 20% and improve performance on state achievement tests in reading, math, and writing.
  • RULER is an SEL Program housed at the Yale University’s Centers for Emotional Intelligence. One RULER study focused on the academic performance and social-emotional competence of 273 5th and 6th grade students in 15 classrooms in three schools. Students in classrooms integrating RULER had higher year-end grades and higher teacher ratings of social and emotional competence (e.g., leadership, social skills, and study skills) compared to students in the comparison group.

Workers selected for or trained in EQ stay longer with their employers. They are able to maintain a positive attitude, establish relationships with colleagues, and work through difficulties.  

  • A 2015 study found a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and employee job satisfaction and intention of staying.
  • PepsiCo found that executives with high EQs had 87% less turnover.
  • A study of 241 employees in the hospitality and tourism industry found that emotional intelligence was strongly correlated to employee retention.

Employees with higher EQ are better equipped to connect in a meaningful way with their customers, their colleagues, and the work at hand. Strong connection leads to engagement in what they are doing and, more importantly, why they are doing it.

  • A 2014 study of 272 IT workers found that emotional intelligence enhances work engagement and reduces organizational deviance.
  • An assessment of 200 IBM managers and 438 of their employees found that higher emotional intelligence in managers raised employee engagement.
  • Singtel is a large telecommunications company in Asia Pacific. It runs a large number of different training and (talent) development programs for staff. Three out of seven of these leadership programs embrace emotional intelligence training for senior executives. Once these very technically competent people recognized the power of tapping into social and emotional skills, they negotiated some very successful outcomes. Almost immediately there was a 19% improvement in leadership engagement and a 6% increase in employee engagement.

High EQ supports increased productivity. Workers are able to focus on the task at hand, collaborate with colleagues, make good decisions, and resolve conflicts effectively. This reduction in friction in the workplace raises productivity.

  • A 2013 study of 89 software development projects found that emotional intelligence affected the speed to market and functionality of the new software products.
  • A 2011 study explored the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance in a sample of 310 police officers. The results show significant correlations between emotional intelligence levels and police job performance. After controlling for general mental abilities and personality traits, emotional intelligence was found to explain additional incremental variance in predicting police job performance.
  • Talentforce, a group that studies EQ, found a 90% correlation between high EQ and high performance, while only 20% of the lowest performers they studied were high in emotional intelligence.
  • After supervisors in a manufacturing plant received training in emotional competencies such as how to listen better and help employees resolve problems on their own, lost-time accidents were reduced by 50%, formal grievances were reduced from an average of 15 per year to 3 per year, and the plant exceeded productivity goals by $250,000 (Pesuric & Byham, 1996).
  • In another manufacturing plant where supervisors received similar training, production increased by 17%. There was no such increase in production for a group of matched supervisors who were not trained (Porras & Anderson, 1981).

Team members who self-aware and can build strong relationships with colleagues have confidence to advance new ideas, accept constructive input, and collaborate with others to bring new ideas to fruition. Leaders who encourage others and resolve conflicts build a climate of innovation.

  • A 2019 study found that emotional intelligence can predict creativity.
  • In 2015, Google found that employees’ ability to take risks and feel vulnerable with team mates increased the likelihood of the team harnessing the power of diverse ideas.
  • A 2014 study found a positive and significant relationship between emotional intelligence and its components with innovative work behavior among 100 bank managers.
  • A 2012 study examines 61 pairs of leaders and employees. The findings confirmed a positive relationship between leaders’ emotional intelligence and employees’ creativity.

Increases in productivity driven by higher EQ leads to more revenues for companies.

  • American Express financial managers completed the Emotional Competence training program were compared to managers who had not. During the year following training, the trained managers grew their businesses by 18.1% compared to 16.2% of those whose managers were untrained.
  • L’Oreal found that salespeople with a high EQ sold $2.5M more than others.
  • In a 2011 report, restaurants managed by managers with high emotional intelligence showed an annual profit growth of 22% versus an annual average growth of 15% for the same period. Restaurants managed by female managers with high EI exhibited an annual
    growth of 28% for the same period.

Employees with higher EQ exhibit better physical and mental health, better decision making and conflict resolution. This leads to reduce company and government spending on workplace safety, physical and mental health, lawsuits, and law enforcement.

  • The US Air Force used the EQ-I (Emotional Quotient Inventory, Multi-Health Systems, Toronto) to select recruiters and found that the most successful recruiters scored significantly higher in the emotional competencies of assertiveness, empathy, happiness and emotional self-awareness. The Air Force also found that by using EQ-I to select recruiters, they increased their ability to predict successful recruiters by nearly three-fold. The immediate gain was a saving of $3 million annually.
  • An important study released in July 2015 that examined nearly 20 years of data from the Fast Track Research Project, reported that learning social competence in kindergarten consistently predicted positive outcomes in education, employment, criminal justice, substance use, and mental health into adulthood.
  • A pioneering cost/benefits analysis undertaken by noted education economists at Columbia University and published in the American Journal of Public Health found an average return on investment of $11 for every dollar spent on SEL programs. Known benefits included: reductions in child aggression, substance abuse, delinquency, and violence; lower levels of depression and anxiety; and improved grades, attendance, and performance in core academic subjects.
  • A Washington State Institute for Public Policy study of one program, PATHS, reported that it yielded a benefit-cost ratio of $15.66 for each dollar invested, and provided long-term results.
