Why Drive Emotional Intelligence

It can be tough being a kid: academic pressure, peer pressure, bullying, exposure to drugs and violence. By itself, making kids better students won’t set them up for success in school or in life.

Kids need education in handling their social and emotional environment. Studies show that this social-emotional learning, or SEL, fuels success and happiness in school and in life.

Parents and caring adults play a huge role in guiding kids’ social and emotional development. So does our EQuip Our Kids! campaign.

Read on for ways that, together, we can advocate for social-emotional learning to help all kids succeed in every aspect of life.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

We’re not automatically born with these skills–but these skills can be taught and learned.

We learn them from experience with family, friends, church, and community.

Emotional intelligence can also be systematically taught in K-12 education.

Schools that infuse their culture and curriculum with emotional intelligence see performance rise, conflict decrease.

Today, only about 10 percent of schools have a systematic approach to emotional intelligence.

Who We Are and What We Do

Unfortunately, parents and the general population are largely oblivious to what knowledgeable educators accept as the exceptional benefits of implementing emotional intelligence education in every school across the country

Big EQ/EQuip Our Kids! Campaign mobilizes the public behind what is so clearly in the public good.

In fact, we are happy to make the argument that, beyond the beautiful upside for all schools,

no mission out there is more important to the long-term overall public good than elevating the human capacity to deal in a healthy way with ourselves and others

We strive to be the first-ever mass advertising, marketing and organizing campaign whose sole goal is that every school include in its curriculum the development of students’ and teachers’ social and emotional intelligence and skills.
